Meet Lola Camilla Partain!  Lola was the First Daughter of Lula Mae!  Born in Corpus Christi in 1904, Lola lived a short but full life.  She had two beautiful daughters, Charlene Vivian (My Grandmother) ,and Mazie Camille!  Lola passed away on February 14th 1938.  Lula Mae raised both her grand daughters from that day on. Lula Mae had already raised 5 children of her own…but was up for the task. She did not have a lot to provide them with financially, but she provided them with love and wit that I still here to this day!  "Stand up Straight, Chin up, and BE PROUD" Is what she would say when they were "fixin' to go to town".

Flo and Joe Konkol (Ms. Marci’s Grams and Gramps) lead
inspiring "repurposed" lives.

For instance when Grandma Flo receives a letter via snail
mail she cuts the 8.5” X 11” sheet into thirds to use the back for lists and
reminders. And when she needs paper plates for eat and toss meals she uses
washed and sanitized meat packing styrofoam as plates……you know, the ones
our meat is packaged in from the market. Genius! My last example illustrates
just how much this couple cares. Mr. Konkol is an umpire and needs black-soled
shoes to do his job, he already purchased a pair with white soles and not wanting to waste the shoes he previously purchased he traced his shoes on an
old black rubber mat and glued the cut mat to his soles. Brilliance at it’s
finest! The Konkol’s are king and queen of repurposing since the good
ole’ 40’s, having had 7 mouths to feed and
years of practice. As for the rest of us we can start with purchase power and
look out for fun functional items we love that have been made from recycled
goods. Check out a few of my favorite repurposed items sold here at Lula Mae. These items are Flo and Joe approved!

My Friends, and long time customers, Sammy and Tami, took me to the Mooneyes event in July!  I had the pleasure of meeting some of their very talented friends.  As we were leaving someone asked me the name of my shop and I proudly said…. "Lula Mae".  Mark, the proprietor of Gasoline Gallery,  recognized the name!  He and his Wife, Taylor were once Vendors at Lula Mae 7 years ago.  They were the creators of some amazing "handcrafted goodies".  What a small world it is!  Since then Mark opened Gasoline Store and Gallery, located in El Segundo.  This past weekend Sammy, Tami, and I attended their show "Enamel" and I was blown away!  I love finding other entrepreneurs who truly love what they do!  

 
The show was great!  So many talented artists, and Mark was of course a perfect host!  Gasoline Gallery prides themselves  in being your "Kustom Kulture, Lowbrow, Hot Rod, and Urban Surf Art Connection".  You absolutely Must check out their next show in October!  Thank You to Gary for supplying photos of the artists and their works to tease you with from this event!  I have also included links to a few of the artists sites below!  The show is still going on if you have the opportunity to stop in you will not regret it!

#1.  Crowned Studio:  Crowned Studio is our favorite Hair Salon in Pasadena!   I have recommended it to many of you, and if you have had a chance to go, then you know why.  The Customer service, quality of service, skill, and all around experience are unsurpassed!  Crowned studio only focuses on hair and makes that their #1 priority!  Crowned Studio has our vote not only for their services but because they are one of the only businesses that still understand the customer is the most important thing!

#2. Violets Cakes: Violets Cakes is our favorite Bakery in Pasadena!  I know many of you just got a craving for one of her cupcakes!  Ooops!  Violet's is my absolute favorite.  Everything they do is from scratch and the proof is in the taste!   The assortment is amazing and I love that on any given day a new flavor is to be had!  Again, the customer service is superb and they truly make you feel like family.  If you have not tried Violet's cakes….PLEASE DO!  I promise you this little guilty pleasure is so worth it!

#3.   La Grand Orange Cafe':  La Grande Orange is our favorite Restaurant in Pasadena!  OK, so I have only recently made it into La Grande Orange.  My friend Elvia and I went for a ladies lunch!  The food, service, drinks, atmosphere, and of course the company….. was to die for!  The History I have with La Grande Orange before dining with them is related to Pasadena.  Allison, the Marketing Director, is a member of the Board of Directors for Old Pasadena.  I have had the pleasure of working with her on the Board, as well as the Old Pasadena Marketing Committee for quite sometime.  The passion and concern La Grande Orange has for Old Pasadena is second to none.  It's businesses like these that help bring us events, clean streets, safety, and more.  La Grande Orange is not just a pleasure for the pallet ..they are the Best Restaurant in Pasadena because of their dedication to not just their customers….but to the community as well!!

#4. Brau Haus:   Brau Haus is our favorite Beauty Salon in Pasadena:  Zoe Van Jones, proprietor of Brau Haus, has been making Pasadena beautiful for years!  This service is somewhat addicting, and totally worth it!  If you have not had an opportunity to check it out…please do yourself the favor and see why we are voting Brau Haus as Best Beauty Salon!

#5. Gold Bug: Bold Bug is our Favorite Jewelry Store in Pasadena:  I always say "Gold Bug is My Second Favorite Store in Pasadena, Cause' Lula is absolutely my first"  I LOVE GOLD BUG!  It is like walking into someones imagination.  The Jewelry selection is so unique and everything in the store is a treat to explore.  Please next time you are in Lula take the time to walk up a block and see why they are our favorite Jewelry Store!  

#6. Lula Mae:  Lula Mae is our Favorite Gift Boutique in Pasadena!  I will leave this up to a customer to tell you why!   Thank you Pasadena, we love what we do and it's because  of you!
